DESCRIPTION:Christian Faur used more than one hundred thousand hand cast cr
ayons of varying colors arranged by tonal value in the frame to produce bea
utiful photo-real images. These individual "pixels" of wax are precisely st
acked into specific locations inside of wooden frames to produce a new art
form that uniquely balances the qualities of both photography and sculpture
. Further\, he has developed a mapping system that translates the English a
lphabet into twenty-six discrete colors and uses these crayon "fonts" to ad
d words and language to each of the pieces in the show.
\nIn his newest bod
y of work\, he focuses on the semiotic nature of color by using this color
alphabet system. This system uses pure color to mimic the function of lette
rs to hold language and forms the basic foundation for many of the experime
ntal works that he has produced. These works range from a "Mating Jacket"-a
brightly colored dinner jacket composed of dozens of colored-sentences of
male oriented come-ons\, pick up lines\, slogans\, and macho self promotion
s-to an artist book\, in which he developed a system of written glyphs to t
ranslate Wittgenstein's text "Remarks on Colour" into pure color.
\n
