DESCRIPTION:As a companion exhibition to Descent to Revolution\, Calling Be
 auty returns to the gallery as a site for primary engagement with art. With
 in the traditional arena of a gallery context\, aesthetics as a system of s
 ocial constructs is addressed in this exhibition by bringing together a col
 lection of contemporary works of art that fall within the realm of what is 
 widely considered "beautiful."

\nThe participants refer directly or som
 etimes indirectly to the canon of Old Master beauty--Caravaggio\, Poussin\,
  Rembrandt\, Velázquez--you know them. The works featured in Calling Beauty
  refer to our sustaining conception of the beautiful\, demonstrating its lo
 ngevity and reconceptualization today in contemporary art. The exhibition e
 xplores issues of taste\, judgement and perception. What makes a great work
  of art? Who determines it? What is beauty's role in our life?

\nConsid
 ering criticism by writers\, artists and philosophers\, the exhibition exam
 ines how determinants of the beautiful are deeply influenced by what the cu
 ltural apparatus calls beauty.
